I am humbled and delighted to have had the opportunity to engage with esteemed academic platforms on topics close to my heart. As a proud graduate of Cohort 6 at Makerere University, I was honored to be invited as a speaker at the prestigious Volkswagen (VW) Summer School, which took place at the Future Africa Campus, University of Pretoria, South Africa. During this enlightening event held from May 15 to 19, 2023, I had the privilege to present on ‘Ethnopharmacological data collection from knowledge holders,’ contributing to the theme of ‘Ethnopharmacological relevance: From bench to shelf, including intellectual property and bioprospecting acts.’
VW Summer School: A Platform for Knowledge Sharing
The VW Summer School provided a unique space for scholars and researchers to exchange ideas and insights on pressing topics in the field of ethnopharmacology. My presentation on ‘Ethnopharmacological data collection from knowledge holders’ allowed me to share my expertise and passion for preserving traditional knowledge and its relevance in modern healthcare practices. The dynamic discussions and interactions during the event reinforced the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and the value of preserving and respecting traditional medicinal practices.
Africa Bioeconomy Coalition Webinar Series
On May 26, 2023, I had the honor of facilitating a session on ‘Formalising the herbal medicine industry in the bio-economy in Africa’ as part of the Africa Bioeconomy Coalition Africa-Bioeconomy webinar series. This platform provided an excellent opportunity to delve into the potential of herbal medicine and its role in shaping Africa’s bio-economy. Engaging with fellow experts and stakeholders in the field allowed us to explore ways to formalize and strengthen the herbal medicine industry in a sustainable and inclusive manner.
APSS Scientific Committee: A New Role
I am thrilled to share that I have been appointed as a member of the African Phytomedicine Scientific Society (APSS) scientific committee based in Pretoria. This appointment is a significant step in my academic journey and will allow me to contribute to the advancement of phytomedicine research in Africa. As a member of the committee, I am committed to promoting evidence-based practices and fostering collaborations that will enrich the field of phytomedicine and its impact on healthcare.
These recent engagements have been remarkable experiences, reaffirming my commitment to advancing research in ethnopharmacology and herbal medicine. The opportunities to share my knowledge, engage with esteemed colleagues, and contribute to global discussions have been both humbling and inspiring. As I continue my academic journey, I am eager to explore further opportunities to make a positive impact on society, advocate for the preservation of traditional knowledge, and foster interdisciplinary collaboration in the pursuit of a healthier and sustainable world.
