I am delighted to share the wonderful news that I have been selected to join the prestigious Global Young Academy (GYA) for a five-year term starting June 2023. As a Lecturer in the Department of Plant Sciences, Microbiology, and Biotechnology at Makerere University, I feel deeply honored to be the sole Ugandan representative in this new cohort of the GYA. This opportunity will allow me to engage with an international community of passionate young scientists, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and making a positive impact on global decision-making processes.

The Global Young Academy: Empowering Young Researchers
The Global Young Academy is an extraordinary platform that connects and mobilizes talented young researchers from across the world. As a member of this vibrant community, I will have the chance to contribute to evidence-informed and inclusive decision-making at global, regional, and national levels. The GYA’s vision of “science for all, science for the future” resonates deeply with my commitment to using science as a driving force for positive change.
A Diverse Community of Excellence
Comprising 200 members and 366 alumni from over 100 countries, the Global Young Academy represents a diverse and passionate group of young scientists. I am thrilled to be part of this dynamic community, where members typically hold their PhDs for 3 to 10 years and are in the early stages of their independent academic careers. I am excited to collaborate with these talented individuals who share a dedication to both scientific excellence and meaningful societal engagement.
Engaging for a Better World
As a GYA member, I will actively participate in working groups, strategic projects, and collaborations with international organizations. These initiatives revolve around crucial thematic areas such as Science and Society, GYA & the SDGs, Research Environment, and Science Education & Outreach. By contributing to statements on pressing global issues and enhancing my cross-cutting skills in science advice and communication, I hope to create a tangible and positive impact on the world through my work.

Supporting Science Worldwide
In addition to my involvement in the GYA, I am eager to support the establishment and coordination of National Young Academies (NYA) and similar initiatives around the world. By facilitating regular meetings of NYAs and providing guidance on establishing them, the GYA empowers young scientists globally to make their voices heard and effect change in their respective countries.
Conclusion
My selection to join the Global Young Academy marks a pivotal moment in my academic journey. It is a privilege to have the opportunity to connect with fellow researchers, engage in meaningful projects, and contribute to shaping a brighter future through science. I am committed to utilizing this platform to advocate for science, to promote inclusivity and diversity, and to inspire the next generation of young scientists worldwide. Together, we will create a better world—one where the voice of young scientists resounds, and where science serves as a powerful catalyst for progress and sustainable development.
